I’ve Reached My Limit with the Debt Limit Talks

I know they’ve been going on for a while.

I know, because, two weeks ago, when I left my dentist’s office, my first thought was this: I guess I’ll just have to raise my debt limit.

My dentist, you see, had indicated that I need a bit of work done. Which means, my upcoming dental expenses will exceed the usual annual figure that reflects general preventative care. Oh well. You do what you gotta do. And sometimes, what you gotta do is raise your debt limit.

The folks inside the Beltway know this, but apparently, they’re having more fun playing games right now than they would be having substantive, sane discussions.

What a mess.

Although I’ve listened to a great deal of NPR commentary, I can’t claim to know the bottom line on this situation. In fact, from all the NPR commentary I’ve listened to for the past three or so years, I’d say that what I do know is this: no one knows for sure. Economists make recommendations based on theories, and the fact that there is more than one economic theory illustrates the degree of crap-shooting involved.

There’s also the general crookedness of the world. The banks are in bed with the people we’ve sent to Washington. No matter what decision is made, a handful of people are going to benefit way beyond their worthiness. That’s just the way it is, and that’s the way it always will be.

But, no matter how the sides of the debate arrive at some sort of compromise (if that is, in fact, possible), it seems to me – from what I’ve heard – that the debt limit must be raised.

I’ve also learned that this issue has become an issue because of all the new members of Congress – those guys and gals who were sworn in last January, after the Tea Party had its gatherings at the polls the previous November. And what I also have gleaned is that a lot of those guys and gals are absolute idiots.

There. I’ve said it.

And you know what? I’m not taking it back!

...Idiots empower idiots who elect idiots, and the chain reaction that led to this most recent phase of pitiable governance began with Sarah Palin. Just three years ago, she popped onto the scene in her gosh-oh-golly LensCrafters, and – thanks to that unfounded confidence she sports with rifle-wielding finesse – she made idiots feel good about themselves. “She’s just like me,” her fans would say. And that, apparently, was one of the reasons she received such a groundswell of support.

The idiot fans then realized there was a place for their kind in politics, and the Tea Party uprisings began. They organized; they identified leaders; and they voted those leaders into Congress last November.

So, while we do not currently have a vice president named Sarah Palin, we have dozens of Sarah Palin hybrids inside the Beltway. And they are making a royal mess of what was already a sufficient mess.

If they gave one minute’s thought to what could really happen if the country failed on its debt obligations come August 2nd, they might realize that it could hurt them, too. But they can’t realize that. They’re idiots.

Many of them also are racists, I suspect, and as such, their agenda is clear: do whatever is possible to destroy the legacy of our country’s first black president.

I’m not saying that Obama is doing right all the time.

I’m not sure anyone could at this point.

Not inside that toxic Beltway.

But I do know this: Obama is not an idiot!

God bless him for putting up with this shit.

Amen, Katie. The Tea Party folks make it their business to flood foreign newspapers with their racist, short-sighted comments. I am appalled by their voices here in the UK, feeding into the racist frenzy of groups like the British National Party and the English Defense League. There are those who are applauding the massacre in Norway, likening the camp on Utoya Island to the Nazi youth camps. The whole world has gone mad and all because a very limited number of idiots seem to have control (and they aren't the presidents and prime ministers).

Katie, You have once again hit a nerve with your followers. The mess in Washington is nauseating. And I so agree with your Tea Party comments. I have a friend who has jumped on that bandwagon, and she is otherwise an intelligent person. She says she is looking for change, but I wonder if she really understands the racism at the base of that group of people. You are correct. Obama is not an idiot. He just has a bunch of idiots around him and in the Congress. This whole thing makes me want to scream. (I just did. It didn't help).

I sympathize with your dental issues.....just returned from my cleaning appointment and have several issues ($$$$) with which to deal.

Namaste..........cj

Amen, sister! You've said what I've been thinking and feeling far better than I could ever have expressed it myself. Thank you for giving me words for all of that today.

And to top it all off, the idjits would rather close up shop then try to find compromise. It's damn convenient to snarl things up so miserably as we've headed into campaign season for 2012. The ultimate goal: lay the blame at Obama's feet and strangle his re-election bid before it's even begun. I hope like hell they lose.

It is hard to see him so frustrated sometimes trying to answer the press questions. And, the dentist stuff? Geez, Louise!!! (yes, I just said Geez, Louise) I just went yesterday. I am STILL paying for crown work last year and now they're saying I need a custom made night guard for grinding. Argh.

I don't think he's an idiot either. But I don't fully believe he knows what he's doing. He's a good speech giver, I will say that.

OMG, the tea party has racists? Why yes they do and they sell t-shirts saying they are racists. Don't you just wish God would take pity on us and create a giant sink hole that swallowed the beltway?

Great post Katie! :)

Tea Party people are idiots. Obama is not. I think there are intelligent moderate Republicans out there somewhere, but there getting harder to find than a needle in a haystack.

I agree with Martha, the whole world has indeed gone mad and we can only hope that common sense returns, as I am sure it will because there just cannot be so many idiots in the world that the rest of us get overrun can there? Great post Katie.

I want to join this chorus. A perfect expression of my feelings too, Katie. These people don't care who they screw over, so long as they get rid of Obama and the motivation behind that comes from the ugliest side of human nature. He knows that and can't come out and say it, so thank you for being an articulate voice saying it for him.

"God bless him for putting up with this shit" and God bless YOU for putting it all down so eloquently, Katie. You're a straight shooter, girl. Don't hold your fire!
